Hydraulic Fitting Series Codes — What Each Digit Means

Every hydraulic hose fitting we buy carries its full specification inside its own part number. The five digits in front are not a catalogue reference — each one answers a specific question about the fitting: what head it has, which thread standard it belongs to, how it seals, which way it bends, and what class of hose it crimps onto. Learn the five positions and you can read a fitting you have never seen before, from any of our suppliers.

Why this matters at the counter

A customer arrives with a burst hose and no paperwork. If you can read the code stamped on the old fitting, you can supply the right replacement without guessing, without a sample being sent back to the supplier, and without the customer returning three days later with a joint that weeps.

It also protects against the most expensive mistake in this product line: two fittings whose threads screw together perfectly but whose sealing faces do not match. The thread going together proves nothing. The code tells you the rest.

How the code is built

The structure is the same on every supplier sheet we buy from — TOPA, FENGHUA, LAIKE Hydraulic and SZ all quote against it:

[ Head ][ Thread standard ][ Sealing face ][ Bend ][ Hose class ] – [ Thread size ] – [ Hose bore ]

Taking 22692-08-08 as the example, that reads as follows.

Position Digit What it means
1 — Head 2 Female swivel, swaged nut
2 — Thread standard 2 BSPP (G)
3 — Sealing face 6 60° cone
4 — Bend 9 90° elbow
5 — Hose class 2 4-wire spiral hose
First dash 08 Thread size — G1/2
Second dash 08 Hose bore — 13 mm, DN13, 1/2 inch

Position 1 — the head

What kind of end it is. Most hose ends are a female swivel, which is why most of our range begins with 2 or 3.

Digit Head type In plain terms
1 Male Thread on the outside
2 Female swivel — swaged nut Nut spins freely on the hose end
3 Female swivel — second body series The same connection in a different body style
5 Bite type Cutting ring bites into the tube
6 Socket-in Pushes into a socket
7 Banjo Ring and bolt, for tight spaces
8 Flange Four-bolt head for large bore
0 Ferrule Crimp sleeve only, no thread

Position 2 — the thread standard

This is the digit that decides which shelf you walk to. Nine standards appear across our range, and each maps to a published international specification.

Position 3 — the sealing face

Where the joint actually seals. This is the digit people ignore, and it is the one that decides whether the joint holds.

Digit Sealing face What you see on the part
1 Multiseal Seals across more than one form
2 Flat seat Flat face — an O-ring or a bonded washer does the sealing
3 Flat + O-ring Flat face with the O-ring captive in a groove
4 24° cone, light series (L) Shallow cone, medium pressure — DIN 2353 L
5 24° cone, heavy series (S) Shallow cone, high pressure — DIN 2353 S
6 60° cone The common BSP and JIS cone
7 74° cone The JIC cone — 37° per face
8 90° Banjo and specialist forms

The same thread, a different seat, and it will leak

BSPP and JIS British use the same thread. Some JIC and ORFS sizes are one dash apart on the same diameter. Two fittings can screw together with no resistance and still weep under pressure, because the faces inside do not match. Always check position 3 before you substitute.

Positions 4 and 5 — bend and hose class

Position 4 — the bend

Digit Bend
1 Straight
4 45° elbow
6 60° elbow
9 90° elbow

On elbows a trailing H number is the leg drop in millimetres — 87392-12H100 is the same elbow as 87392-12 with a 100 mm leg. We carry H80, H100, H125, H150 and H175.

Position 5 — the hose class

Digit Hose it is built for
1 1 and 2-wire braid — R1 / EN 853 1SN, R2 / EN 853 2SN
2 4-wire spiral — 4SP, 4SH / EN 856
3 6-wire spiral

This is not a size code, and it is the position most often misread. The same family, same bend and same bore exists with both 1 and 2 in 363 places in our range — the fitting body differs because the hose it crimps onto differs, not because the size does.

The two dash numbers

The last dash is always the hose bore. The first is the thread. They are usually different numbers, and that is correct — the thread is larger than the bore it serves in every standard.

Hose bore — the dash size

The dash number is the bore in sixteenths of an inch. Our supplier sheets quote the rounded EN/ISO nominal bore (DN), not the exact decimal.

Dash Bore Inch BSP thread at the same dash
-04 6 mm (DN6) 1/4 G1/4
-05 8 mm (DN8) 5/16
-06 10 mm (DN10) 3/8 G3/8
-08 13 mm (DN13) 1/2 G1/2
-10 16 mm (DN16) 5/8 G5/8
-12 19 mm (DN19) 3/4 G3/4
-16 25 mm (DN25) 1 G1
-20 32 mm (DN32) 1-1/4 G1-1/4
-24 38 mm (DN38) 1-1/2 G1-1/2
-32 51 mm (DN51) 2 G2

Two exceptions to learn

Exception How to read it
Flange fittings — 873, 876, 879 The first dash is the flange size, not the thread. 87312-16-12 is a 1 inch flange on 3/4 inch hose — that is correct, not a mismatch.
Komatsu families — 186, 286 The first dash is the metric thread in millimetres. 18611-33-16 means M33×1.5 on 25 mm hose. A bracketed number such as (1.0) is the thread pitch.

Where a fitting carries only one dash, both sizes are the same. 87612-08 is a 1/2 inch flange on 13 mm hose.

The flange families are a special case

On families 873, 876 and 879 the third digit is the pressure class rather than a sealing face. Both classes are SAE J518 four-bolt flanges and both bolt to a flat pad, but the head diameters differ — a Code 62 head will not sit in a Code 61 clamp, and a Code 61 head in a Code 62 port is rated for half the pressure.

Size Dash Code 61 head — series 873 Code 62 head — series 876 / 879
1/2 inch · DN13 -08 30.2 mm 31.7 mm
3/4 inch · DN19 -12 38.1 mm 41.3 mm
1 inch · DN25 -16 44.4 mm 47.6 mm
1-1/4 inch · DN32 -20 50.8 mm 54.0 mm
1-1/2 inch · DN38 -24 60.3 mm 63.5 mm
2 inch · DN51 -32 not stocked 79.4 mm

Code 61 is the 3,000 psi standard series; Code 62 is the 6,000 psi high-pressure series. Every head diameter above matches the published SAE J518 table.

What the code does not tell you

The code identifies the connection. It does not decide whether the assembly is fit for the job. Before cutting a hose, establish the working pressure including surges, the fluid and its temperature, the environment, the bore required for the flow, and the routing. Those come from the customer and the machine, not from the part number.

Nor does the code substitute for the supplier drawing where an exact seat angle, torque figure or pressure rating decides whether a joint holds. Where it matters, take the figure from the manufacturer document for that exact part.
