Choosing Hose and Fittings by Application

Thread standard follows where the machine was built more than what it does. Knowing what a customer drives usually tells you which shelf to walk to before a caliper comes out. This is the map from machine to fitting family, and the questions that settle the hose grade.

Choosing the hose grade

Return lines, tank lines, low-pressure feed R1 — EN 853 1SN One wire braid is enough where pressure is low and steady
Working pressure on most implements — tipper rams, loader arms, steering assist R2 — EN 853 2SN The everyday choice. Most replacements on a machine are R2
Main pressure on excavators and heavy plant, circuits that shock R4 — EN 856 4SH Four spiral layers for high pressure and hard pulsing

When in doubt, match what came off

Read the layline on the old hose. It names the standard and grade, and usually the maximum working pressure. Matching it is safer than estimating from what the machine looks like — and stepping up a grade is never wrong, while stepping down always is.

The questions that settle it

Ask What it decides
What machine, and what does this circuit do? Thread family and the likely grade
What pressure does it run at, and does it shock? Grade. Surges do not show on an ordinary gauge — a circuit that hammers needs more than the steady figure suggests
Is it suction or pressure? A pump inlet sees negative pressure and collapses an ordinary pressure hose
How hot does it get — fluid and surroundings? Whether the route needs moving or sleeving, and whether the grade is adequate
What fluid? Compatibility of tube, cover, reinforcement and fittings
Where does it run? Abrasion, vibration, UV and ozone exposure — and whether it needs clamping or sleeving
How much movement is there? Length, slack, bend radius, and whether the route bends in more than one plane

Bore — big enough, not bigger

Undersized hose costs pressure and generates heat from fluid velocity; the machine feels slow and the oil runs hot. Oversized hose costs money, takes space and is harder to route. Match the bore that came off unless there is a reason to change it, and if the customer wants a change, establish the flow first.

  • Both ends decoded and written as full specifications

  • Hose grade stated and matched to the ferrule wire count

  • Length measured to the sealing face, elbow ends to the centreline

  • Orientation of the two ends recorded

  • Assembly blown through and both ends capped

  • Part numbers written on the job card with the machine make and model
