An air spring replaces a steel spring with a rubber and fabric bellows filled with compressed air. On a bus or a loaded truck that means ride height stays constant whether the vehicle is empty or full, and ride quality does not collapse under load. It also means the suspension depends on an air system — compressor, dryer, valves and lines. When an air spring problem is reported, the bellows is often innocent: the fault is usually air supply or a levelling valve. This article covers how the system works, how to find a leak properly, what destroys a bellows, and what to record before ordering.

1. What an Air Spring Does and What It Needs
Air Spring
A steel spring has one rate: it deflects in proportion to load, so an empty vehicle rides high and hard and a loaded one sits low. An air spring is different. A levelling valve adds air as load goes on and releases it as load comes off, so the vehicle keeps the same ride height and the spring rate rises with the pressure.
- Constant ride height, empty or loaded — important for a bus doorway and for trailer coupling height.
- Ride quality that does not collapse under load, which matters for passengers and for fragile freight.
- Lower shock loading into the chassis on poor road surfaces.
- But it depends entirely on the air system. No air, no suspension — and a vehicle sitting on its bump stops is not driveable.

2. The Parts of the Air Suspension System
| Part | What it does | How it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Air spring (bellows) | Carries the load on a column of compressed air | Splits, chafes through, or the bead unseats from the plate |
| Levelling valve | Senses ride height and adds or releases air | Sticks, leaks internally, or its linkage bends — a very common cause of a one-sided vehicle |
| Compressor | Supplies air to the system | Wears, passes oil, or cannot keep up with a leak |
| Air dryer | Removes moisture before it reaches the system | A saturated cartridge lets water through, which corrodes valves |
| Lines and fittings | Carry air to each spring | Chafing, cracked nylon line, loose push-fit fittings |
| Shock absorber | Damps the movement the spring allows | Worn dampers give a floating ride and over-extend the bag |

3. Symptoms — and Why the Bellows Is Often Innocent
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Check before replacing the spring |
|---|---|---|
| Sits low on one corner overnight | Leak at that spring, its line or its valve | Soap-test the fitting and the valve first — often the fitting, not the bag |
| One side high, one side low, consistently | Levelling valve or its linkage | Adjust or replace the valve; the springs are usually fine |
| Sits low all round | Compressor output, dryer, or a system leak | Check system pressure before touching any spring |
| Compressor runs constantly | A leak somewhere, or a failed unloader | Find the leak — a compressor run to death is an expensive consequence |
| Harsh ride with correct height | Failed shock absorbers, not the spring | Damper test |
| Hiss that stops when the engine is off | Leak at a fitting or valve | Trace with soap solution |

Never work under a vehicle supported only by air suspension
If a line or a bellows lets go, the vehicle drops instantly to the bump stops. Always support the chassis on stands rated for the weight before going underneath, and depressurise the circuit before disconnecting any line.

4. Finding a Leak Properly
- Charge the system fully and stop the engine. A leak is easiest to find with pressure held and no compressor noise.
- Use soap solution in a spray bottle on every fitting, the valve ports, the bead at each end of the bellows, and along the lines.
- Work the suspension through its travel and re-test — a bellows can seal at one height and leak at another.
- Check the levelling valve exhaust port. Continuous bubbling there means the valve is passing internally, not that the spring is leaking.
- Inspect the full length of every line where it passes a bracket or the chassis, which is where chafing happens.
- Note how long the vehicle takes to sit down. Minutes means a large leak; overnight means a small one, often a fitting.
5. What Destroys an Air Spring
- Running with no air. Driving on a deflated bag folds and creases the rubber, and the creases become splits. A vehicle that has sat down should not be driven far.
- Chafing. A bellows touching a chassis rail, a brake line or a stone trap will wear through. Check clearance through the full travel.
- Oil contamination. Compressor oil carry-over, or a leaking damper, attacks the rubber. Fix the source or the new bag goes the same way.
- Grit trapped between the bellows and the piston, which acts like sandpaper on every stroke.
- Over-extension when the axle hangs, if the dampers are worn or the wrong length.
- Age and ozone. Rubber perishes even standing still; check vehicles that have been parked for long periods before they return to service.

6. What to Record Before Ordering
- Vehicle make, model, year and axle — front, drive or trailing, and whether it is a bus or a truck chassis.
- Bellows type: convoluted, or rolling-lobe sleeve.
- Number of convolutions, counted on the old bag.
- Maximum outside diameter, and the design height if known.
- End fittings top and bottom: bead plate with studs, blind nut, crimped, or a piston with a central bolt — with stud spacing and thread size.
- Air port size and position.
- Any part number moulded into the rubber, which is the fastest route to the right part.

7. Fitting and Commissioning
- Support the chassis on stands and exhaust the circuit before disconnecting anything.
- Clean both mounting faces. Grit under a bead plate causes a slow leak that is then blamed on a faulty new part.
- Do not inflate an unrestrained bellows. Free of the vehicle, it can extend violently.
- Fit in pairs across an axle. One new and one aged bag gives uneven height and uneven load sharing.
- Check clearance all round through full travel before returning the vehicle to service.
- Set ride height with the levelling valve to the manufacturer figure, not by eye. Wrong ride height shortens bag life and upsets brake load sensing on many vehicles.
- Re-check for leaks at full pressure, and again after a short road test.
