Almost every joint in a suspension that is not a ball joint is a rubber bush. Stabilizer shaft rubbers, spring shackle bushes, strut bar bushes, control arm bushings, steering rack grommets — they are cheap parts, they all perish, and a vehicle with worn bushes fails an alignment check no matter how many times the tracking is reset. This article explains what each family of bush does, how to tell a worn bush from a worn joint, and what to record before ordering.

1. The Families of Bush and What Each One Does
Bush
| Bush | Where it sits | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Stabilizer shaft rubber | Clamps the anti-roll bar to the chassis | Lets the bar twist but not move sideways. The most common knock source on a rough road |
| Suspension bush (control arm) | Between the arm and the subframe or body | Locates the wheel fore and aft; sets caster and a large part of the ride comfort |
| Spring shackle bush | In the shackle at the rear eye of a leaf spring | Lets the spring change length as it flattens. Common on light commercials |
| Strut bar bush | At each end of the tension or strut rod | Holds the wheel against braking and acceleration forces |
| Grommet, steering rack | Between the rack body and the crossmember | Stops the rack moving under steering load — worn, it feels like play in the rack |

2. How a Rubber Bush Actually Fails
Bush
Bushes rarely break cleanly. They degrade, and the degradation is what makes them easy to miss on a quick inspection.
- Cracking and crazing from ozone, heat and ultraviolet. Surface cracks that run deep have already lost stiffness.
- Separation from the metal sleeve. The rubber is bonded to an inner and outer sleeve; once it separates, the arm moves independently of the bolt.
- Swelling from oil contamination. Engine oil, gear oil and diesel all attack rubber. A swollen, soft bush near a leak is being destroyed by the leak.
- Compression set. Years of load flatten the rubber permanently, which lowers the arm and changes geometry without any visible tear.
- Water ingress and rust inside the sleeve, which then seizes the bush to the bolt and tears the rubber on the first movement.

3. Telling a Worn Bush from a Worn Joint
| Test | Worn bush | Worn ball joint or link |
|---|---|---|
| Lever the arm with a pry bar | The rubber visibly distorts and the sleeve moves within it | A hard click or knock with no rubber movement |
| Knock over small bumps at low speed | Usually a stabilizer shaft rubber or a link bush | Ball joint knocks are typically heavier and felt through the wheel |
| Steering wanders on a straight road | Control arm or strut bar bush letting the wheel move fore and aft | Track rod end play is felt as vagueness on turn-in |
| Uneven tyre wear with good alignment figures | Bushes moving under load — the figures are only correct while the car is stationary | Joints usually show as a specific wear pattern |
| Noise changes after a very wet day | Bush — water gets into a separated bush and quietens it temporarily | Joints do not change with weather |
Check bushes with the suspension loaded, not hanging
A bush on a lift with the wheels hanging is unloaded and can feel perfectly tight. Check on a drive-on ramp, or with the arm supported at normal ride height, where the rubber is carrying what it carries on the road.

4. What Worn Bushes Do to Tyres and Alignment
This is the part that costs the customer real money, and it is the reason a vehicle keeps coming back for tracking that never holds.
- Alignment is measured static, but the vehicle drives loaded. Worn bushes let the geometry change the moment the car moves, so correct figures on the ramp mean nothing on the road.
- Tyres wear on the inner or outer edge within a few thousand kilometres of a "corrected" alignment.
- The vehicle pulls under braking as the arm moves back on the worn side.
- Steering feels vague at speed and needs constant small corrections.
- Replace bushes before paying for alignment. Alignment carried out on worn bushes is money spent twice.

5. What to Record Before Ordering
- Vehicle make, model, production year and variant — 2WD or 4WD changes several bushes.
- Which bush, in plain terms: anti-roll bar, front lower arm front bush, rear shackle, strut rod, and so on.
- Position: front or rear, left or right, upper or lower.
- Inner sleeve bore, outer diameter and overall length in millimetres if you are matching a loose bush.
- For a stabilizer shaft rubber, the bar diameter — measure the bar itself with a vernier, not the old rubber, which has spread.
- Whether you want bushes only or the complete arm. On many vehicles a new arm with bushes fitted costs little more than pressing bushes into the old one once labour is counted.
6. Fitting Without Tearing the New Bush
Bush
- Press, do not hammer. A bush driven in with a hammer goes in crooked and the bond tears on the first load.
- Use the correct lubricant. Rubber grease or soapy water only. Petroleum grease, oil and diesel destroy rubber — a bush lubricated with engine oil is already failing as it is fitted.
- Clean the housing to bare metal. Rust in the bore means the bush sits tight on one side and loose on the other.
- Observe any orientation mark or void position. Many bushes have voids that must face fore-and-aft; rotated 90°, the compliance is in the wrong axis.
- Torque the through bolts at normal ride height, not with the suspension hanging. Tightened at full droop, the rubber is pre-twisted and will tear within months — this is the single most common fitting error.
- Replace in pairs across an axle and check alignment afterwards.
