The top of a strut carries the whole corner of the vehicle, and it does it through a rubber mount and, on most struts, a small bearing that lets the strut rotate as the wheels steer. When that assembly wears, the symptoms are easy to blame on something else — a knock over bumps sounds like a worn link, and a notchy, graunching steering wheel sounds like the steering rack. This article explains what is in a top mount, what each symptom actually points to, and why replacing the shock absorber without the mount is usually a wasted job.

1. What a Top Mount Assembly Contains
Top Mount
| Part | What it does | Fails as |
|---|---|---|
| Bearing shock mounting (top mount) | Bonded rubber and steel that bolts the strut to the body and absorbs road shock before it reaches the cabin | Rubber cracks, separates from the steel, or collapses — the strut top moves |
| Strut bearing | Lets the strut rotate with the steering on a front strut | Dry, rough or seized — steering notchy and slow to self-centre |
| Upper spring seat and isolator | Locates the coil spring and stops it ringing against the steel | Perished rubber lets the spring contact metal — creak and knock |
| Dust cover and bump stop | Keeps grit off the rod and limits travel at full compression | Split cover admits grit; a crumbled bump stop lets the strut bottom out |
2. Mount, Bearing, Kit — What to Order
Mount, Bearing သို့မဟုတ် Kit
| Product | Contains | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Bearing shock mounting | The rubber-and-steel mount only | The bearing and spring seat are known good, which is rare |
| Bearing shock mounting kit | Mount, bearing, and usually the spring seat, dust cover and bump stop | Almost always — everything in that stack has done the same mileage |
| Shock absorber mounting | The lower or rear mounting bush, depending on the vehicle | Rear shocks, and vehicles with a separate lower mounting bush |
| Shock absorber bush | The bonded bush at one eye of the shock | Rear shocks with eye mountings, and light commercials |
The kit is cheaper than doing the job twice
A strut has to be dismantled with a spring compressor to reach any of these parts. If you replace the mount and the bearing fails six months later, the entire job is repeated. The parts in the kit are a small fraction of the labour.

3. Symptoms and What Each One Really Means
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Commonly blamed instead |
|---|---|---|
| Knock or clonk over bumps, from the top of the wheel arch | Collapsed or separated top mount | Stabilizer link or ball joint |
| Steering feels notchy, or the wheel does not return smoothly after a turn | Dry or seized strut bearing | Steering rack or power steering |
| Creak or groan when turning at low speed, especially on lock | Strut bearing, or a dry spring seat | Ball joint |
| Steering wobble that appears only under braking | Worn mount letting the strut top move | Warped discs |
| Uneven front tyre wear with correct alignment figures | Mount collapse changing camber under load | Tyre quality |
4. Why the Mount Is Replaced with the Shock
A new shock absorber bolted through a collapsed mount will not deliver what it should. The mount is in series with the damper: whatever the mount lets move, the damper never sees.
- The new damper feels no better. The customer paid for a shock and still has a soft, noisy corner.
- The knock does not go away, because the knock was never the shock.
- The new damper wears faster if the rod is no longer held square by the mount.
- The labour is identical. The strut is already out and compressed; adding the mount costs minutes.
- Replace in axle pairs. A new mount on one side and a collapsed one on the other gives uneven ride height and pulls under braking.
5. Checking a Mount Before You Condemn It
- Bounce test with a hand on the mount. Push the corner down hard and feel the strut top through the wheel arch. Movement or a click as it settles means the mount.
- Turn the steering lock to lock with the vehicle stationary and a hand on the spring. A rough, gritty feel or a click at the same point each time is the bearing.
- Look at the rubber. With the strut out, cracks that run through to the steel, or rubber separated from the steel plate, are conclusive.
- Check ride height side to side. A collapsed mount lowers that corner measurably.
- Inspect the bump stop. Crumbled rubber means the strut has been bottoming out, and the mount has been taking hits it was not designed for.
- Compare both sides. On a vehicle of this age, the good side tells you what the bad side should feel like.

6. Fitting — the Safety Point That Matters Most
A coil spring under compression can kill
Never dismantle a strut without a proper spring compressor in good condition, correctly seated on at least four coils, with the strut held securely. A spring that escapes a compressor carries enough energy to cause fatal injury. If you do not have the right tool, bring the strut to us or to a workshop that does.
- Mark the spring position before dismantling so it goes back with the end in the same seat.
- Seat the spring end against the stop in the lower seat. A spring fitted a few degrees out sits crooked and the strut binds.
- Fit the bearing the right way up. Most are marked; upside down it loads on the wrong face and fails quickly.
- Use a new rod nut where one is specified and torque it — do not rattle it tight with an impact gun.
- Do not tighten the mount nuts with the suspension hanging where the design requires it loaded; check the vehicle procedure.
- Check alignment afterwards. Replacing mounts changes camber and caster on most struts.
