Older trucks, buses and many light commercials do not steer through a rack. They use a recirculating-ball box, a pitman arm, a drag link, an idler arm and king pins at the wheel ends. Every one of those joints adds play as it wears, and the play adds up: a vehicle can have six lightly worn joints and a steering wheel with a hand-width of free movement while no single part looks bad enough to condemn. This article explains each part, how to test for wear properly, and why king pins are the one job you should not delay.

1. The Parts and What Each One Does
| Part | What it does | Wears as |
|---|---|---|
| Pitman arm | Bolts to the steering box output shaft and converts its rotation into a push and pull | Play at the ball end, or a loose taper on the box shaft |
| Drag link | Carries that movement from the pitman arm across to the steering knuckle | Worn ball sockets at either end |
| Idler arm | Supports the far end of the centre link on the opposite side to the box | Vertical play — the classic wandering-steering part |
| King pin kit | The pin, bushes, thrust bearing, seals and shims that let the whole stub axle pivot | Pin and bush wear; a seized pin from lack of grease |
2. Why Free Play Adds Up
Each joint in the chain sits between the steering wheel and the road wheel, so their wear is cumulative. A millimetre at the pitman arm, a millimetre at the drag link, some vertical movement at the idler and a worn king pin bush together produce steering that wanders badly while each part on its own would pass a casual glance.
- Test the whole chain before replacing anything. Replacing one joint on a vehicle with five worn ones changes almost nothing, and the customer sees no improvement for the money.
- Have a helper rock the steering wheel through the free play while you watch each joint in turn from underneath.
- Adjusting the steering box to mask play is the wrong repair. It tightens the box on centre, wears it in that position, and leaves the real wear untouched.
- Quote the whole job. It is more honest and usually cheaper in labour than doing it piece by piece.

3. Testing Each Joint Properly
| Joint | How to test | Condemn when |
|---|---|---|
| Pitman arm | Helper rocks the wheel; watch the arm at the box shaft and at its ball end | Any movement at the taper, or visible play in the ball |
| Drag link | Watch both ends while the wheel is rocked | Any perceptible lost motion at either socket |
| Idler arm | Grip the arm and push up and down with the weight on the wheels | More than a few millimetres of vertical movement |
| King pin | Lift the wheel clear, lever under the tyre, and watch the top of the stub axle | Any rocking at the pin, once wheel bearing play is ruled out |
| Wheel bearing (rule it out first) | Rock the wheel at 12 and 6 o’clock with it lifted | Play here mimics king pin wear — check before ordering pins |
Rule out the wheel bearing before ordering king pins
Wheel bearing play and king pin play feel almost identical at the tyre. The difference is where the movement is: bearing play moves the hub on the stub axle, king pin play moves the whole stub axle on the beam. Watch the pin itself, not the tyre.
4. King Pins — the One Not to Postpone
King Pin —
A king pin carries the whole front corner of a loaded vehicle and pivots under that load every time the driver steers. When one seizes or wears badly the consequences are not gradual.
- Steering becomes heavy and uneven, worse in one direction than the other.
- The vehicle wanders and needs constant correction, which is exhausting over a long run and dangerous when loaded.
- Tyre wear accelerates, often on one shoulder only.
- A seized pin can crack the stub axle or the beam eye, turning a kit into a major repair.
- Grease is what keeps it alive. Most king pins have nipples and need grease at every service; a pin that is never greased will not reach half its life.
- Always replace both sides. They have carried the same load for the same distance.
5. What to Record Before Ordering
- Make, model, production year, and the axle — front beam axles differ between load ratings on the same model name.
- For a king pin kit: pin diameter and length, and whether the kit should include bushes, thrust bearing, shims and seals.
- For an idler arm: which side, and whether it is the arm only or arm with bracket.
- For a pitman arm: the spline count on the box shaft and the taper size at the ball end.
- For a drag link: overall length between centres, and the thread hand at each adjuster if it is adjustable.
- Any part number cast into the old component.
6. Fitting and Greasing
- Ream the new bushes to size after pressing them in. Bushes shrink as they are pressed; a pin forced into an unreamed bush will seize.
- Fit the thrust bearing the correct way up and set end float with the shims supplied.
- Fit new seals at the top and bottom — they are what keep grease in and water out.
- Grease until fresh grease appears at the seals, then again after the first road test.
- Torque tapers correctly and use new split pins or nuts. A taper that is not pulled fully home will work loose.
- Check alignment afterwards. Every part in this chain affects toe, and king pins affect camber as well.
