Steering and Suspension Parts — What Each One Does

Steering and suspension parts wear gradually, and a worn part rarely fails on its own — it loads the parts next to it until they wear too. This article explains what each steering and suspension component does, so you can work out which one is causing a symptom before ordering.

1. Steering parts — Steering

  • Rack end — also called the inner tie rod. It screws into the steering rack and sits inside the rubber bellows. It transfers rack movement outward. | Steering rack
  • Tie rod end — the outer joint. It connects the rack end to the steering knuckle through a tapered ball stud. This is the part that sets and holds wheel toe. |
  • Adjusting sleeve — the threaded sleeve between the two. Turning it changes toe alignment.

2. Suspension joints — Suspension

  • Ball joint — a tapered ball stud in a socket, letting the wheel steer and move up and down at the same time. Lower ball joints usually carry vehicle weight; upper joints often only guide.
  • Control arm — the arm that locates the wheel to the chassis, pivoting on bushings at the inner end and a ball joint at the outer end. |
  • Bushing — a rubber or polyurethane sleeve at each pivot. It allows controlled movement while damping vibration.
  • Stabilizer link — connects the anti-roll bar to the suspension, reducing body roll in corners.

3. Damping and axle location —

  • Shock absorber — controls how fast the suspension moves. The spring carries the weight; the shock absorber stops it oscillating.
  • U bolt — clamps a leaf spring pack to the axle on trucks and pickups. It is a stretch fastener and is not reusable.

4. Matching a symptom to a part —

  • Knocking over bumps — stabilizer links first, then control arm bushings, then ball joints.
  • Vague or wandering steering — tie rod ends and rack ends.
  • Uneven or feathered tyre wear — toe alignment, worn tie rod ends, or worn bushings letting the geometry move.
  • Bouncing after a bump, nose diving under braking — shock absorbers.
  • Axle shifting, leaf spring noise on a truck — U bolts.

Always align the wheels afterwards

Replacing any steering or suspension part that affects geometry — tie rod end, rack end, control arm, ball joint or bushing — requires a wheel alignment afterwards. Skipping it will destroy a set of tyres.
