A constant-velocity joint lets a driven wheel turn and steer at the same time while the shaft keeps delivering even torque. Nearly every CV joint that fails in Myanmar fails for one reason: the rubber boot split, the grease escaped, water and grit got in, and the joint was destroyed over the following weeks. This article covers the two joint positions, how to read the symptoms, what to identify before ordering, and why a torn boot caught early is a cheap repair.

1. What a CV Joint Does
CV Joint
A drive shaft has to deliver torque to a wheel that is moving up and down over bumps and, on the front axle, turning left and right. A plain universal joint speeds up and slows down through each revolution when it is working at an angle. A constant-velocity joint does not — output speed stays equal to input speed at any angle within its range. That is what makes smooth power delivery through a steered corner possible.
2. Outer and Inner Joints — Different Jobs, Different Failures
| Outer joint (wheel end) | Inner joint (gearbox end) | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Ball-and-cage (Rzeppa) | Tripod / plunge joint |
| Movement | Large steering angle, little length change | Small angle, slides in and out as the suspension moves |
| Classic symptom | Clicking on full lock, especially in a tight turn | Shudder under acceleration from a standstill, or a clunk on take-up |
| Why it fails | Boot splits at the outer fold, which flexes most | Boot splits, or the joint wears a groove where it plunges |
3. The Boot Fails First
Boot
The joint itself is hardened steel and will run for a very long time as long as it stays packed with grease and sealed. The rubber boot is what keeps it that way, and the boot has a hard life: constant flexing, road heat, and on Myanmar roads, water and fine grit.
Once the boot splits, the sequence is predictable. Grease is thrown out within a few days. Water and dust enter. The polished ball tracks corrode and then wear. Within weeks the joint is scrap.
A split boot is a cheap repair. A week later it is not.
Replacing a boot and repacking the grease costs a fraction of a new joint. Inspect the boots whenever the vehicle is on a lift — look for splits, cracks at the folds, missing clamps, and grease sprayed on the inside of the wheel arch.

4. Symptoms and What Each One Means
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Clicking or knocking on full lock | Worn outer joint | Replace the outer joint. Check the other side too — they wear at a similar rate |
| Shudder under hard acceleration from rest | Worn inner tripod joint | Replace the inner joint or the complete shaft |
| Clunk when taking up drive or changing between forward and reverse | Wear in the joint splines or the plunge groove | Inspect both joints; check gearbox mounts before condemning the shaft |
| Grease sprayed inside the wheel arch | Split boot, joint may still be good | Replace the boot and repack now, before the joint is damaged |
| Vibration that rises with road speed | Bent shaft or failed shaft bearing, not usually the joint | Check shaft runout and the centre support bearing |
5. What to Identify Before Ordering
CV joints are not interchangeable across a model range. The same vehicle can take different joints depending on drivetrain, transmission and even ABS fitment, so identify the part rather than the car.
- Vehicle make, model, production year and variant — 2WD or 4WD, manual or automatic.
- Position — front or rear, left or right, and outer or inner.
- Spline counts — the number of splines at the wheel end and at the gearbox end. Count them on the old part; this is the single most useful figure.
- Whether an ABS ring is fitted to the joint, and how many teeth it has.
- Joint only, or joint with boot and grease — a boot kit and a joint kit are different part numbers.
- The OEM number if you can read it on the old part, which removes all doubt.
Count the splines — it settles most arguments
Two joints that look identical often differ only in spline count. Counting takes a minute and prevents a wasted journey. If you cannot count them cleanly, photograph the shaft end square-on and send it with your enquiry.
6. Fitting and Grease
- Use the grease supplied with the joint. CV grease is usually molybdenum-based and is formulated for the pressures inside the joint. Ordinary chassis grease will not survive there.
- Pack the joint, not just the boot. The grease has to be worked into the ball tracks by hand before the boot goes on.
- Fit new clamps. Reused clamps do not hold, and a boot that slips at one end fails immediately.
- Position the boot with the suspension at normal ride height, not hanging on the lift. A boot clamped at full droop will stretch and tear at ride height.
- Replace the circlip on the shaft if one is fitted. It is a few kyat and it is what stops the joint walking off.
- Torque the hub nut to specification and use a new nut or a new split pin. An under-torqued hub nut destroys the wheel bearing as well as the joint.
7. How to Order from Win Auto Parts
Win Auto Parts
Win Auto Parts stocks CV joints, boot kits and related driveline parts for the Japanese and commercial platforms common on Myanmar roads. Stock is confirmed against the part number, not the vehicle description.
- Call 09 5105768 with the details from section 5.
- Or email support@winautoparts.com, attaching a photograph of the shaft end showing the splines and any markings.
- Or browse at winautoparts.com.
- If the boot has only just split, ask about a boot and grease kit before ordering a complete joint — it is often all that is needed.
