Outer or inner — which one has failed?

A driveshaft has two joints and they fail differently, so the symptom tells you which to order. A clicking or knocking that appears only on full lock, usually while turning slowly, is the outer joint. A vibration or shudder felt under acceleration in a straight line is the inner joint. In almost every case the real cause is the boot. The joint itself is packed with grease and sealed; once the boot splits, the grease is thrown out and road grit gets in, and the joint is finished within weeks. A split boot caught early is a boot job. How do you order the right CV joint?

Send the make, model and year, the engine, whether the gearbox is manual or automatic, and whether it is the inner or outer joint and which side. Transmission type matters because it changes the shaft, and with it the spline count and the joint. What should be checked when fitting?

Use all the grease supplied and no other type — CV grease is a specific molybdenum-based product and ordinary bearing grease will not survive in the joint. Seat both boot clips properly, and make sure the boot is not stretched or twisted at full lock, which is where it will split first.
