How to Read a Belt Number and Measure a Belt

A V-ribbed belt number tells you the number of ribs, the rib profile and the length. If you can read the number off the old belt, you can order the correct replacement without measuring. This article explains how to read a belt number and what to measure when the number has worn away.

Take the example 6PK1580:

1. 6 — the number of ribs across the belt.
2. PK — the rib profile. PK is the metric automotive profile and is by far the most common. PJ, PL and PM are other profiles, mostly industrial.
3. 1580 — the effective length in millimetres.

So 6PK1580 is a six-rib belt in the PK profile, 1580 mm long. A belt with the same length but a different rib count will not fit the pulleys.

2. If the number is unreadable — နံပါတ် မဖတ်နိုင်ပါက

1. Count the ribs across the width of the belt. Count the ribs, not the grooves between them.
2. Measure the length. Lay the belt flat in a circle and measure around it, or use a belt measuring tool. Take the measurement carefully — a belt 20 mm too long will slip and squeal, and one 20 mm too short may not fit at all.
3. Send both figures with the vehicle make, model, year and engine code, and say which accessories the engine has. A vehicle with air conditioning often uses a different belt from the same model without it.

3. Timing belts are ordered differently — Timing Belt မှာယူခြင်း

A timing belt is identified by its tooth count, tooth profile and width, and these vary by manufacturer rather than following one universal code. Do not try to match a timing belt by measuring. Send us the vehicle make, model, year and engine code — the engine code is essential, because one model often used several different engines.
