An engine has two kinds of belt and they do completely different jobs. A V-ribbed belt drives the accessories. A timing belt keeps the camshaft and crankshaft synchronised. Confusing the two is expensive: a broken V-ribbed belt strands the vehicle, while a broken timing belt can destroy the engine. This article explains the difference.

V-ribbed belt ဖြတ်ပိုင်းပုံနှင့် အရွယ်အစား ကုဒ် ဖတ်နည်း။ ပထမဂဏန်းသည် အကြောင်းရေ ဖြစ်သည်။
1. The V-ribbed belt — အလွှာလိုက် Belt
The V-ribbed belt is the flat belt with lengthwise ribs running on the outside of the engine. It drives the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor and, on many engines, the water pump. It is also called a serpentine belt or poly-V belt.
If it breaks, the vehicle loses charging, power steering assistance and air conditioning, and on many engines it will overheat because the water pump has stopped. The engine itself is not damaged by the belt breaking.
2. The timing belt — Timing Belt
The timing belt is the toothed belt inside a cover on the front of the engine. It drives the camshaft from the crankshaft so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment relative to the pistons.
On an interference engine, a broken timing belt destroys the engine
In an interference engine the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different moments. If the belt breaks, the camshaft stops while the crankshaft keeps turning, the pistons strike the open valves, and the result is bent valves and often damaged pistons and cylinder head. Replace a timing belt at the manufacturer's interval — not when it looks worn, because it will look fine right up until it fails.

3. Timing belt or timing chain? — Belt လား Chain လား
Some engines use a metal timing chain instead of a rubber belt. A chain is normally designed to last the life of the engine and is not a routine service item, though the tensioner and guides do wear. 4. What to replace together — အတူတကွ လဲရမည့် ပစ္စည်းများ
- V-ribbed belt — replace the automatic tensioner and any idler pulleys with it. A worn tensioner is the usual reason a new belt squeals or fails early.
- Timing belt — replace the tensioner and idlers as a kit. If the water pump is driven by the timing belt, replace it at the same time. The labour is already done, and a water pump failure later means doing the whole job twice.
