My new belt squeals. Is it a faulty belt?
Usually not. A new V-ribbed belt that squeals is almost always slipping because of a weak automatic tensioner, a worn idler pulley, pulley misalignment, or oil on the belt. Check the tensioner first — it is the most common cause, and it should be replaced with the belt as routine.
Can I fit a belt that is slightly longer or shorter?
No. The automatic tensioner has a limited range of travel. A belt even slightly too long cannot be tensioned properly and will slip; one too short may not fit over the pulleys at all. Order the exact length, and make sure the rib count matches.
The belt looks fine. Do I still need to replace it?
For a timing belt, yes — replace it at the manufacturer's interval regardless of appearance, because a timing belt gives no warning before it fails. For a V-ribbed belt, appearance is a poor guide on modern EPDM belts, which wear thin rather than crack. Use a rib wear gauge or go by age and distance.
Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?
If the water pump is driven by the timing belt, yes. Almost all the labour cost is in gaining access, and that access is already open. If the pump fails a year later, the entire job is repeated.
What is an interference engine, and how do I know if mine is one?
In an interference engine the valves and pistons pass through the same space at different moments, so a broken timing belt lets them collide and wrecks the engine. Why do you need the engine code?
One vehicle model is often sold with several different engines, and each may use a different belt. The engine code removes the guesswork. It is usually stamped on the engine block and printed on the vehicle identification plate.
