Win Auto Parts stocks V-belts in three constructions — raw edge cogged (RECMF), raw edge plain (REMF) and raw edge multi-ply (MPMF). They can look similar in a rack and they are not interchangeable by eye: the construction decides how tight a pulley the belt can wrap, how much heat it tolerates, and how long it lasts. This article explains what each code means, which one a given drive needs, and how to read the size printed on the belt you are replacing.

1. What the Three Codes Mean
| Code | Construction | Recognise it by |
|---|---|---|
| RECMF | Raw edge, cogged. Notches moulded across the inner face so the belt can bend tightly without the underside compressing | Teeth or notches on the inside face; bare fabric-free side walls |
| REMF | Raw edge, plain. Same bare side walls, but a smooth inner face | Smooth inside face, no notches |
| MPMF | Multi-ply, wrapped. Several fabric plies over the cord, with a fabric cover all round | Fabric visible on every face, including the sides |
"Raw edge" means the sides of the belt are cut rather than covered in fabric, so rubber runs directly against the pulley groove. That grips better and runs cooler than a wrapped belt, which is why raw edge has largely replaced wrapped construction on modern accessory drives.
2. Which Construction Suits Which Drive
| Construction | Best suited to | Avoid where |
|---|---|---|
| RECMF (cogged) | Small-diameter pulleys, tight wraps, back-side idlers, high-speed accessory drives | Nothing in particular — it is the most tolerant of the three |
| REMF (plain) | Straightforward two-pulley drives with generous pulley diameters | Small pulleys — the underside compresses and the belt cracks across its face |
| MPMF (multi-ply) | Heavier, slower industrial and agricultural drives, and older commercial applications | High-speed automotive accessory drives, where it runs hotter and slips more readily |
If the belt runs over a small pulley or an idler, choose cogged
The cogs exist so the inner face can compress into the notches instead of bulging. On a tight wrap, a plain belt is forced to do something it was not built for, and the first sign is fine cracks running across the inner face.

3. Reading the Size off the Old Belt
Every belt carries its size on the outer face. When the printing has worn away, the size can still be recovered — but measure, do not estimate.
- Read the printed code first. A marking such as 13 x 900 gives top width in millimetres and length; a code such as A38 or 4PK1010 follows a standard series.
- Measure the top width across the widest part of the belt, and the thickness, with a vernier.
- Measure the length around the outside with a flexible tape, or lay the old belt flat and measure it doubled.
- Note whether the length quoted is inside, outside or effective — different manufacturers quote differently, and this is where most ordering errors come from.
- Count the ribs if it is a multi-rib belt, and say so — that is a different product family, covered in the V-ribbed belt article.
- Bring the old belt or a clear photograph of the printed side. It removes every doubt at once.

4. Why the Wrong Construction Fails Early
| Mistake | What happens | How soon you notice |
|---|---|---|
| Plain belt on a small pulley | The inner face is compressed beyond what it tolerates and cracks across the width | Weeks to a few months |
| Wrapped belt on a fast accessory drive | Runs hot, glazes, then slips; the fabric cover polishes smooth | Squeal under load, often within weeks |
| Cogged belt where a wide plain belt was specified | Usually works, but contact area is reduced — check it is not slipping under peak load | Variable |
| Right construction, wrong length | Either it cannot be tensioned, or the adjuster is at the end of its travel from day one | Immediately |
5. Tension — the Single Biggest Cause of Belt Failure
More belts are killed by tension than by age. Both directions are damaging, and they fail in different ways.
| Condition | What it does | Signs |
|---|---|---|
| Too loose | The belt slips in the groove, generates heat, glazes and then burns | Squeal on start-up and under load; glazed shiny side walls; black dust |
| Too tight | Overloads the belt cords and, more expensively, the bearings in the alternator, water pump and idlers | Belt stretches or snaps early; whining bearings; premature pump or alternator failure |
| Correct | Roughly 10–15 mm deflection on a long free span under firm thumb pressure — always follow the manufacturer figure where one is given | Quiet, even wear across the face |
Re-check tension after the first short run
A new belt seats into the pulley grooves and loses tension in its first few minutes of running. Check and re-tension after a short drive, then again at the next service. A belt that was set correctly once and never checked is the usual reason a vehicle comes back squealing.

6. Inspection and Replacement Intervals
- Inspect at every service. Turn the belt over and look at the inner face — that is where cracking starts, and it is invisible from above.
- Replace on condition, not only on distance. Cracks across the inner face, missing chunks, glazed side walls, fraying edges or a belt that has stretched past its adjuster are all replacement points.
- A typical accessory belt in Myanmar conditions runs 40,000–60,000 km, but heat, dust and idling in traffic shorten that.
- Replace belts as a set where more than one drives the same engine. A new belt beside an old one loads the old one harder.
- Change the belt whenever the water pump or alternator is replaced. The labour is already done, and a used belt refitted over a new pulley rarely lasts.
- Check the pulleys, not just the belt. A rusty, scored or wobbling pulley destroys a new belt quickly.

7. How to Order from Win Auto Parts
Win Auto Parts
Win Auto Parts stocks all three constructions across the common automotive, commercial and light industrial sizes. Belts are confirmed by size and construction, not by vehicle name alone, because the same vehicle can leave the factory with different accessory drives.
- Call 09 5105768 with the printed code from the old belt, or its measured width, thickness and length.
- Or email support@winautoparts.com with a photograph of the printed side of the belt.
- Or browse the engine range at winautoparts.com.
- Say which construction you need — RECMF, REMF or MPMF — or describe the pulley layout and we will advise.
- Workshops replacing belts in quantity should ask for a quotation; trade rates apply from five units.
