Belt Wear, Replacement Intervals and Warning Signs

A V-ribbed belt gives warning before it fails. A timing belt does not. That difference decides how each one should be managed: inspect the V-ribbed belt, and replace the timing belt on schedule whatever it looks like.

1. V-ribbed belt — what to look for — စစ်ဆေးရန်

  • Cracks running across the ribs — several cracks close together means replace
  • Chunks missing from a rib
  • Frayed or shredded edges
  • A shiny, glazed running surface, which means the belt has been slipping
  • Oil or coolant contamination — find and fix the leak, because a new belt will be ruined too

A modern belt that looks perfect can still be worn out

Older belts cracked as they aged. Modern EPDM rubber belts do not crack much — instead the ribs slowly wear thinner, which sinks the belt deeper into the pulley grooves and loses grip. The belt can look almost new and still be finished. Use a rib wear gauge, or replace on age and distance rather than appearance.

2. Squealing — အော်သံ

A belt that squeals on start-up or under electrical load is slipping. Before fitting a new belt, check why:

  • A weak or seized automatic tensioner — the most common cause
  • A worn idler or tensioner pulley bearing
  • Pulley misalignment
  • Oil or coolant on the belt
  • A seizing accessory, such as a failing alternator or air conditioning compressor

Fitting a new belt without correcting the cause means the new belt squeals too. Belt dressing sprays hide the noise for a short time and make the problem worse.

3. Timing belt — replace on schedule — သတ်မှတ်ကာလအတိုင်း လဲပါ

Follow the interval in the vehicle manufacturer's service schedule. Two points matter:

  1. The interval has a distance limit and a time limit. Rubber ages whether the vehicle is driven or not, so a low-mileage vehicle still needs the belt changed on time.
  2. If the vehicle's history is unknown and there is no record of the belt being changed, treat it as due now. On an interference engine that decision is much cheaper than the alternative.

4. After fitting a timing belt — တပ်ဆင်ပြီးနောက်

  • Set the tension exactly as the manufacturer specifies. Too loose can jump a tooth; too tight destroys the tensioner and idler bearings.
  • Turn the engine over by hand through two full revolutions and re-check that all timing marks line up before starting it.
  • Do not turn the engine backwards once the belt is fitted.
