Ball Joints — Identification and Wear Checks

A ball joint lets the wheel steer and move up and down at the same time while carrying load. A failed lower ball joint can let the wheel collapse under the vehicle, so it is one of the few suspension parts where wear is a safety matter rather than a comfort one. This article explains how to check a ball joint and how to order the right replacement.

1. Loaded and unloaded joints — ဝန်ခံနှင့် ဝန်မခံ အဆစ်

Some ball joints carry vehicle weight and others only guide the wheel. Which is which depends on the suspension design and on where the spring sits. This matters because a loaded joint must be unloaded before you can measure its play — otherwise the vehicle's own weight holds the joint tight and hides the wear.

2. Checking for wear — ဟောင်းနွမ်းမှု စစ်ဆေးခြင်း

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely, following the method the manufacturer specifies for that suspension type so the joint is genuinely unloaded.
  2. Grip the tyre at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and rock it in and out. Vertical play here points to a ball joint or a wheel bearing — check both before ordering.
  3. Use a pry bar under the joint to look for lift.
  4. Compare any measured play against the manufacturer's limit for that vehicle. Play limits differ by model, so use the figure in the workshop manual rather than a general rule.

A torn boot means replace, whatever the play measures

Once the rubber boot splits, the grease escapes and water and grit get in. The joint may still feel tight, but it is on a short countdown. Replace it rather than re-greasing it.

3. Fitting — တပ်ဆင်ခြင်း

  • Separate the taper with a ball joint separator or puller, not a hammer.
  • Clean the taper seat completely. Any grease or dirt stops the taper locking.
  • Torque the nut to the manufacturer's specification, then tighten further to align the split pin hole. Never back off.
  • Some joints are pressed into the control arm and need a press and the correct adapters. Where the joint is not serviceable separately, the complete control arm is the correct replacement.
  • Set the wheel alignment afterwards.

Tell our trade desk the vehicle make, model and year, whether the joint is upper or lower, and which side. Some models changed joint design mid-production, so the year matters.
