Brake Shoes and Brake Pads — Which Your Vehicle Uses

Brake pads and brake shoes both press friction material against a moving surface, but they belong to two different brake systems and are not interchangeable. Many commercial vehicles in Myanmar use both at once — discs at the front and drums at the rear. This article explains the difference and how to tell which your vehicle has.

1. Disc brakes use pads — Disc Brake တွင် Pad သုံးသည်

A disc brake has a flat rotor turning with the wheel and a caliper that squeezes two pads against it from either side. Discs shed heat well and resist fade, which is why they are fitted at the front where most braking effort goes.

2. Drum brakes use shoes — Drum Brake တွင် Shoe သုံးသည်

A drum brake has a hollow drum turning with the wheel and two curved shoes inside it. A wheel cylinder pushes the shoes outward against the inner surface of the drum. Drums are enclosed, so they keep dirt and water out and hold the parking brake well, but they trap heat and can fade under repeated heavy braking.

3. Which does your vehicle have? — ဘယ်စနစ်လဲ

• Look through the wheel. If you can see a flat metal disc and a caliper gripping its edge, that wheel has disc brakes and uses pads.
• If you see a solid round drum with no visible disc, that wheel has drum brakes and uses shoes.
• Most pickups and light trucks have discs at the front and drums at the rear, so both parts are needed on the same vehicle.
