A brake wheel cylinder is the small hydraulic actuator inside a drum brake: fluid pushes its pistons outward, the pistons push the shoes against the drum. It is a cheap part that fails quietly, and when it fails it takes the brake shoes and sometimes the drum with it. Win Auto Parts stocks wheel cylinders and cylinder cup kits across the light commercial and truck platforms common in Myanmar. This article explains how a cylinder is identified by bore, what a leaking cylinder looks like before it becomes obvious, and when a cup kit is the right repair and when it is not.

1. What the Wheel Cylinder Does
Wheel Cylinder ၏ လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်
Inside the drum, the wheel cylinder sits at the top between the upper ends of the two shoes. Fluid pressure from the master cylinder enters the centre and drives a piston out of each end. Each piston pushes one shoe outward against the drum. When the pedal is released, the shoe return springs push the shoes back and the pistons with them.
Two rubber cups seal the pistons in the bore, and two dust boots keep water and grit out of the ends. Everything that goes wrong with a wheel cylinder starts at one of those four rubber parts.

2. Bore Size Is the Identifying Measurement
Bore အရွယ်အစားက အဓိက
Wheel cylinders look alike. What separates them is bore diameter, and bore diameter decides how much force the cylinder applies for a given pedal pressure. Fitting the wrong bore changes the front-to-rear brake balance of the vehicle.
| What to record | How to get it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bore diameter | Measure the piston with a vernier, or read the size cast or stamped on the body | Decides braking force and balance — the single most important figure |
| Body mounting | Number and spacing of the mounting bolt holes | The cylinder must sit square on the backing plate |
| Inlet thread | Thread size and pitch of the brake line port | A mismatch here cannot be adapted safely |
| Bleed nipple position | Which side, and the thread size | Must point upward when fitted or the circuit cannot be bled |
| Left or right | Some cylinders are handed | Ordering a pair avoids the problem |

Never fit a different bore to "improve" the brakes
A larger rear bore moves braking effort rearwards and can make the rear wheels lock before the front — the vehicle becomes unstable under heavy braking, in the wet especially. Match the original bore exactly.

3. Cylinder or Cup Kit — Which Repair Is Right
Cylinder အသစ် သို့မဟုတ် Cup Kit
| Bore condition | Right repair | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth, bright, no pitting or scoring | Cup kit is acceptable | The seal runs on a sound surface |
| Light staining that hones out completely | Cup kit, after honing and thorough cleaning | Staining without depth does not cut the seal |
| Pitting, rust craters or a visible ridge | Replace the cylinder | A pit cuts the new cup within weeks and the leak returns |
| Scored from a seized piston | Replace the cylinder | The bore is no longer round |
| Any doubt at all | Replace the cylinder | The price difference is small; a repeat failure is not |

4. Spotting a Leak Before It Strands the Vehicle
ယိုစိမ့်မှုကို စောစော သိရှိနည်း
A wheel cylinder rarely bursts. It weeps first, often for weeks, and the evidence is hidden inside the drum. These are the signs, in the order they usually appear:
| Sign | What it means | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid level in the reservoir slowly dropping with no visible leak elsewhere | Fluid is going somewhere — a drum brake is the usual answer | Investigate now |
| Damp or darkened dust on the inside of the wheel | Fluid has passed the dust boot and is reaching the outside | High |
| Pedal slowly sinking when held under steady pressure | Internal leak past a cup, in this cylinder or the master cylinder | Do not drive |
| Brake shoes soaked or streaked on one wheel only | That cylinder is leaking; the shoes are contaminated and must be replaced | High |
| One brake weak, or the vehicle pulls away from that side | Loss of pressure at that wheel | High |

Peel back the dust boot to check
With the drum off, carefully lift the edge of each dust boot. A trace of fluid behind the boot means the cup is passing, even if nothing is visible from outside. That is the check that finds a failing cylinder before it ruins a set of shoes.

5. What a Failed Cylinder Does to the Rest of the Brake
အခြားအစိတ်အပိုင်းများအပေါ် သက်ရောက်မှု
- The shoes are finished. Brake fluid soaks into the friction material and cannot be cleaned out. Contaminated shoes glaze, grab unevenly and must be replaced.
- The drum needs cleaning, and sometimes machining. Fluid on the drum surface glazes under heat.
- A seized piston destroys the bore. Once the cylinder stops returning, the shoe drags, the brake overheats, and the drum can distort.
- Braking becomes uneven between sides, which is felt as a pull and shows as uneven shoe wear.
- The rest of the hydraulic system is suspect. If one cylinder has corroded internally, the fluid has been absorbing water — change the fluid and inspect the others.

6. Fitting and Bleeding
တပ်ဆင်ခြင်းနှင့် လေထုတ်ခြင်း
- Replace wheel cylinders in axle pairs. The other side is the same age and has had the same fluid through it.
- Fit the bleed nipple uppermost. A cylinder mounted with the nipple low cannot be bled, and trapped air gives a permanently soft pedal.
- Use clean fresh fluid of the specified type and never reuse fluid drained from the system.
- Do not stretch the boots over sharp edges during assembly — a torn boot lets water straight into the new bore.
- Adjust the shoes after fitting, then bleed, then check the adjustment again once the pedal is firm.
- Bleed the furthest wheel first and work back towards the master cylinder, unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.
- Check for weeping after the first road test, with the drum still warm.

7. How to Order from Win Auto Parts
Win Auto Parts မှ မှာယူနည်း
Win Auto Parts stocks wheel cylinders and cylinder cup kits for the light commercial and truck platforms common on Myanmar roads. Because the identifying figure is the bore, these are confirmed by measurement rather than by vehicle description.
- Call 09 5105768 with the bore diameter, the vehicle details, and whether you need a cylinder or a cup kit.
- Or email support@winautoparts.com with a photograph of the old cylinder showing any cast or stamped markings.
- Or browse the brake range at winautoparts.com.
- Order in axle pairs — it is the correct repair and usually the cheaper one once labour is counted.
- Bring the old cylinder to South Dagon or Thakaytha if you would rather have the bore measured at the counter.
