Bore size is not a preference
A smaller bore than the original restricts flow and slows release, which can leave a brake dragging. A larger bore changes pedal feel and may not seat correctly in the fitting. Match the original.

3. Identifying the One You Need

- Bring the old hose if you can. Matching at the counter takes minutes and removes every doubt. Either distribution centre can do it.
- Otherwise photograph both ends square-on, with a ruler or vernier in the frame for scale.
- Record make, model, year and variant, and say whether the hose is front or rear, left or right.
- Say whether the vehicle has ABS — some models route and size the hoses differently.
- Read the printing on the old hose. Bore, standard and often a manufacturer code are moulded into the cover.
- Check thread pitch with a gauge if you have one. Pitch is what separates two fittings that look identical.

A dragging brake is usually the hose, not the caliper
A collapsed hose lets pressure through to the caliper but will not let it back. The caliper gets stripped and rebuilt, the fault returns, and only then is the hose replaced. Test first by cracking the bleed nipple — if the brake releases, the hose is the restriction.

Never substitute one for the other
They are not interchangeable in either direction. If the vehicle is a truck or bus with an air system, say so when ordering.

6. Fitting — the Mistakes That Cause a Comeback

- Do not twist the hose. Hold the hex on the fitting with a second spanner while you tighten. A twisted hose is pre-loaded and will fail early, and it can foul the tyre at full lock.

- Check clearance at full lock in both directions and at full suspension droop, not just where it sits on the lift.
- Refit the bracket and clip. An unsupported hose chafes on the arm or tyre and fails without warning.
- Bleed the circuit properly afterwards and check the pedal, then check again after a short road test.
- Look for weeping after the first drive, when everything is hot and has moved.

7. Replacement on Age, Not Only on Damage

A brake hose does not have to look damaged to be finished. Rubber ages from the inside as well as the outside, and the inner liner can be breaking down while the cover still looks acceptable.
- Inspect at every service — flex each hose by hand and look for cracking, and check for bulges with the brakes applied by a second person.
- Replace in axle pairs, not one side. A hose on the other side of the same axle has had the same life.
- Replace whenever a caliper or wheel cylinder is replaced for a sticking fault — the hose is the more likely culprit and the labour is already done.
- Replace after any contamination of the brake fluid with oil or petrol. Mineral oil swells the rubber and the damage is not reversible.
- Treat a vehicle that has stood for a long time as suspect, regardless of distance covered.
