Replacing Brake Shoes — Fitting, Adjustment and Bedding In

A drum brake has more separate parts than a disc brake and they can be reassembled wrongly in ways that still allow the wheel to turn. This article covers fitting brake shoes correctly and setting the adjustment afterwards.

1. Before you dismantle — မဖြုတ်မီ

1. Photograph the assembly before removing anything, from two angles. Spring positions and the adjuster orientation are easy to get wrong and hard to remember.
2. Do one side at a time. Leave the other side assembled as a reference.
3. Clean the assembly with brake cleaner. Do not use an air line.

2. Fitting — တပ်ဆင်ခြင်း

1. Compare each new shoe against the one it replaces. On many drum brakes the two shoes are not identical — the linings differ in length or position, and they must go back in the correct positions. Fitting them the wrong way round gives poor braking even though everything bolts together.
2. Clean the backing plate and apply a small amount of high temperature brake grease to the raised contact pads where the shoes slide. Keep grease away from the friction surfaces.
3. Fit new return and hold-down springs in the positions shown in your photograph.
4. Clean and free the adjuster, apply a little high temperature grease to its threads, and wind it fully back before fitting the drum.
5. Reconnect the parking brake lever and cable.

3. Adjustment — ချိန်ညှိခြင်း

1. Refit the drum and turn the adjuster out until the shoes just begin to drag on the drum.
2. Back the adjuster off until the drum turns freely with only the lightest contact.
3. Repeat on the other side and check both wheels feel the same.
4. Adjust the parking brake cable last, after both drums are set. Adjusting the cable to compensate for badly adjusted shoes leaves the shoes dragging and overheating.
5. Apply the footbrake firmly several times with the vehicle stationary, then re-check the adjustment. Many vehicles use a self-adjuster that operates on braking or in reverse.

4. Bedding in — အသစ် ဝင်အောင် မောင်းခြင်း

New shoes contact the drum on a small area until they wear to match its curve. Follow the lining manufacturer's bedding-in procedure, and warn the customer that braking will improve over the first period of use. Avoid heavy repeated braking while the shoes are bedding in, because overheating new linings glazes them and the glaze is permanent.
