Shock Absorbers — Choosing for Load and Road

A shock absorber does not hold the vehicle up — the spring does that. The shock absorber controls how quickly the suspension moves, which is what keeps the tyre in contact with the road. This article explains how to tell when one is worn and how to choose a replacement for the load the vehicle actually carries.

1. Signs of a worn shock absorber — ဟောင်းနွမ်းမှု လက္ခဏာ

• Oil wet down the body of the unit — a leaking shock absorber has lost its damping and must be replaced
• The vehicle continues moving up and down after a bump instead of settling in one movement
• Heavy nose dive under braking, or excessive body roll in corners
• Cupped or scalloped tyre wear, caused by the tyre bouncing rather than rolling
• Rattling from a worn top mount or bush

The old habit of bouncing a corner by hand tells you very little on a modern vehicle. Look for oil leakage and tyre wear instead.

2. Twin-tube and monotube — အမျိုးအစား နှစ်မျိုး

• Twin-tube — the common original design. Comfortable, economical, and fine for normal loads.
• Monotube — a single larger-bore tube with gas pressure. Sheds heat better and resists fade under sustained hard work, so it suits loaded commercial use and rough roads.

3. Choosing for the work the vehicle does — အလုပ်အလိုက် ရွေးချယ်ခြင်း

• Normally laden passenger vehicle on sealed roads → standard replacement to original specification
• Pickup or truck carrying load most days → heavy duty rating
• Rough or unsealed roads, or upcountry work → heavy duty, and check the top mounts and bushes at the same time

Fitting a heavy duty shock absorber to a lightly loaded vehicle makes the ride harsh without improving control. Match the rating to the load the vehicle actually carries, not the worst day it has ever had.

4. Replace in pairs — အတွဲလိုက် လဲပါ

Always replace shock absorbers as an axle pair. A new unit on one side and a worn unit on the other gives uneven damping, which makes braking and cornering unpredictable.

5. Shock absorber or strut? — Shock နှင့် Strut ကွာခြားချက်

A strut is structural: it locates the wheel and forms part of the steering axis, and usually carries the coil spring. A shock absorber only damps. They are not interchangeable, so tell us which the vehicle uses when you order.
