A brake shoe is the curved steel shoe with the friction material already bonded to it, ready to fit. A brake lining is the friction material on its own, to be riveted or bonded onto a shoe that is being reused. What should be checked when fitting brake shoes?

Always replace shoes as an axle set, never one wheel. Measure the drum’s inside diameter for wear and ovality before the new shoes go in, because new friction material against a worn drum gives a pedal that never settles. Fit new springs and clips where the kit includes them; old springs lose tension and let the shoes drag.
