Piston Rings — What They Do and When to Replace Them

Piston rings do three jobs at once: they seal the combustion pressure above the piston, they carry heat from the piston into the cylinder wall, and they control how much oil stays on the bore. When they wear, the engine burns oil and loses compression. This article explains how to tell whether the rings are the problem before committing to a rebuild.

1. What is in a ring set — Ring အစုံတွင် ပါဝင်သည်များ

• Top compression ring — takes most of the combustion pressure and most of the heat transfer.
• Second compression ring — seals what passes the top ring and helps scrape oil.

Both burn oil, and replacing the wrong one wastes an engine strip. The timing of the smoke separates them:

• Valve stem seals — smoke on start-up after the vehicle has stood, or when lifting off after a long descent. Clears once running.
• Piston rings — smoke under load and acceleration, with blow-by at the oil filler.

4. Confirming with a compression test — Compression စစ်ဆေးခြင်း

1. Carry out a dry compression test on all cylinders and record the readings.
2. Add a small amount of engine oil to a low cylinder and test again — this is the wet test.
3. If the reading rises significantly with oil, the oil is temporarily sealing worn rings or a worn bore. The problem is below the piston crown.
4. If the reading does not change, the leak is past the valves or the head gasket, not the rings.

Compare readings against the manufacturer's specification for that engine, and look at the difference between cylinders as well as the absolute figures.
