What should be checked when fitting rings?

Check the end gap of every ring in the bore it will run in, at the specified depth, against the manufacturer’s figure — gaps that are too small will butt and scuff the bore when hot, and too large will not seal. Fit the rings the right way up: most compression rings have a marking that faces the crown, and fitting one inverted will burn oil from the first mile.
