Why the size matters more than the part number

Engine bearings are sold in sizes: standard, and then undersizes that match a crankshaft which has been reground. Ordering the right bearing therefore needs the size as well as the engine. If the crank has been ground 0.25 mm undersize, a standard bearing will not give the clearance the engine needs, and the engine will either seize or knock. What should be checked when fitting?

Check the clearance rather than assuming it. Measure with Plastigauge or a bore gauge against the manufacturer’s specification for that engine, and confirm the crankshaft turns freely by hand with every cap torqued down. Fit bearings dry into clean housings with the locating tabs seated, oil the running face only, and never file or scrape a bearing shell to adjust fit.
