What each ring does

Sizes and oversizes

Ring sets are supplied at standard bore size and at oversizes, commonly 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 mm. If the block has been rebored, the ring set must match the finished bore, not the original engine specification. Measure the bore before ordering rather than assuming.

Checking the gap

Every ring must be checked for end gap in the bore it will run in, square to the cylinder, before assembly. A gap that is too small closes as the ring heats and the ring butts, scoring the bore. A gap that is too large loses compression and passes oil.

• Square the ring in the bore with a piston crown before measuring
• Check each ring in the cylinder it will run in, not just one
• File to size only from the outside inwards, and deburr afterwards

Fitting cautions

• Stagger the ring gaps as the manufacturer specifies; never line them up
• Use a ring compressor, never force the piston into the bore
• The bore needs a correct crosshatch finish for the rings to bed in
• Run in gently and change the oil early after a rebuild
