1. General Safety & Preparation
Before beginning any filter replacement, follow these safety steps to protect yourself and the vehicle:
▸ Ensure the engine has cooled down completely before working near the engine bay. Hot engine components and hot oil can cause serious burns.
▸ Park the vehicle on a flat, stable surface and apply the handbrake before raising the vehicle.
▸ Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): gloves and eye protection are recommended.
▸ Place a drain pan or rag beneath the filter area to catch any residual fluid.
▸ Confirm you have the correct HIFI replacement filter before starting. Refer to H06 or H07 for part number identification.
|
⚠️ Warning Never work on the fuel system while the engine is running or when the engine is still hot. Fuel is highly flammable. Ensure no open flames or sources of ignition are present in the work area.
2. Oil Filter Replacement (HO / HOP / HV Series)
HIFI oil filters use a standard spin-on or cartridge design compatible with OEM housings. Replacement is typically performed during every oil change service.
Recommended Interval: Every 5,000–10,000 km or as specified in the vehicle service manual.
Tools Required: Oil filter wrench (correct size for your filter), drain pan, clean rags, new engine oil.
Replacement procedure:
1 Warm the engine briefly (2–3 minutes) to thin the oil, then switch off and allow to cool for 15 minutes.
2 Place a drain pan beneath the oil filter location.
3 Using the oil filter wrench, turn the old filter counter-clockwise to loosen and remove it.
4 Allow residual oil to drain completely into the pan.
5 Clean the filter mounting surface on the engine block with a clean rag. Remove any remnant of the old gasket.
6 Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the rubber gasket on the new HIFI filter.
7 Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, then tighten a further 3/4 turn by hand. Do not use a wrench to tighten — hand-tight is correct.
8 Check the drain plug is secure, then refill with the correct grade and quantity of engine oil.
9 Start the engine and run for 2 minutes. Check for leaks around the filter seal.
10 Switch off, wait 5 minutes, then check the oil level on the dipstick. Top up if required.
|
💡 Tip Pre-filling a new spin-on oil filter with oil before installation reduces the time the engine runs with low oil pressure on startup. This is best practice for high-mileage or performance engines.
3. Air Filter Replacement (HAP Series)
HIFI HAP series air filters are panel or cylindrical type dry filters housed in the engine airbox. Replacement requires no special tools in most vehicles.
Recommended Interval: Every 15,000–20,000 km, or earlier if driving in dusty conditions (common in Myanmar dry season roads).
Tools Required: Flathead screwdriver or panel clip tool (for airbox clips), clean rag.
Replacement procedure:
1 Locate the air filter housing (airbox) in the engine bay. It is typically a black plastic box connected to the intake duct.
2 Release the airbox clips or screws securing the lid. On most vehicles, this requires no tools — clips can be opened by hand.
3 Lift the lid and carefully remove the old air filter element.
4 Inspect the airbox interior. Wipe out any loose dust or debris with a clean dry rag. Do not use compressed air inside the airbox — this can force debris into the intake.
5 Insert the new HIFI HAP filter element into the housing, ensuring it sits flat and the sealing edges contact the housing frame on all sides.
6 Close and re-latch the airbox lid securely. Ensure all clips are fully engaged.
7 Start the engine and listen for any unusual intake noise. A hissing or whistling sound may indicate a loose filter seal.

📘 Note In Myanmar, roads during the dry season produce significantly more dust than in rainy season. Vehicles operating in dusty areas (e.g., construction sites, unpaved roads) should inspect the air filter every 5,000–8,000 km and replace earlier than the standard interval if heavily contaminated.
4. Fuel Filter Replacement (HF / HFC Series)
Fuel filter replacement requires greater care than oil or air filter work due to the presence of pressurised fuel in the system. This procedure should be performed by a trained technician or workshop.
Recommended Interval: Every 30,000–40,000 km, or as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Tools Required: Fuel line disconnect tool (where applicable), drain pan, clean rags, fuel-resistant gloves.
|
⚠️ Warning Depressurise the fuel system before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so can result in fuel spray which is a serious fire and injury hazard. Always refer to the vehicle-specific service manual for the correct depressurisation procedure.
General replacement procedure (inline HF type):
1 Locate the fuel filter — typically along the fuel line under the vehicle or in the engine bay. Refer to the vehicle service manual for the exact location.
2 Relieve fuel system pressure following the vehicle manufacturer procedure (typically by removing the fuel pump fuse and cranking the engine briefly).
3 Place a drain pan beneath the filter. Have clean rags ready.
4 Disconnect the fuel line fittings at each end of the filter. Capture any residual fuel in the drain pan.
5 Note the flow direction arrow on the old filter before removing. The new HIFI filter must be installed in the same orientation (arrow pointing toward the engine / fuel rail).
6 Install the new HIFI HF filter, connecting the fuel lines securely. Replace any sealing washers or O-rings included with the new filter.
7 Reinstate the fuel pump fuse. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not crank) 3–4 times, pausing between each, to re-pressurise the fuel line.
8 Inspect all connections for fuel leaks with the ignition ON. Then start the engine and re-check.
|
❗ Important HIFI HF and HFC filters are NOT interchangeable. HF is an inline filter (connects directly to fuel lines). HFC is a cartridge/canister filter (fits into a housing). Using the wrong type will result in a non-fitting installation. Always confirm the code prefix before ordering.
5. Cabin Air Filter Replacement (HAC Series)
The cabin air filter cleans the air entering the vehicle interior through the HVAC system. It is one of the easiest filters to replace and requires no tools in most vehicles.
Recommended Interval: Every 12,000–15,000 km, or annually — whichever comes first. Replace sooner if a musty odour is detected from the air conditioning vents.
Tools Required: Usually none. Some models may require a flathead screwdriver to release a retaining clip.
Most vehicles locate the cabin filter behind the glove box or under the dashboard on the passenger side. Replacement procedure:
1 Open the glove box. On most vehicles (Toyota, Nissan), the cabin filter is accessible by opening the glove box fully and releasing the damper arm.
2 Lower the glove box fully (if required) by squeezing the sides inward to release the side stops.
3 Open the filter housing cover and slide out the old filter element. Note the orientation (which end faces up / which face faces forward).
4 Dispose of the old filter. Do not shake it inside the vehicle as it contains accumulated dust and pollen.
5 Insert the new HIFI HAC filter in the same orientation as the old one. Most filters have a directional arrow or label indicating the correct orientation.
6 Close the filter housing cover, re-attach the glove box damper, and close the glove box.
7 Run the vehicle air conditioning for 2–3 minutes and check for improved airflow through the vents.
|
💡 Tip A blocked cabin filter significantly reduces airflow from the air conditioning system and can cause the blower motor to work harder than necessary. If your AC feels weaker than usual, a clogged cabin filter is often the first thing to check.
6. Replacement Interval Summary
| Filter Type | HIFI Series | Standard Interval | Early Replacement Trigger |
| Oil Filter | HO / HOP / HV | Every 5,000–10,000 km | Dark/gritty oil, oil pressure warning |
| Air Filter | HAP | Every 15,000–20,000 km | Visible dirt, reduced engine power, dusty roads |
| Fuel Filter | HF / HFC | Every 30,000–40,000 km | Hard starting, engine hesitation, weak fuel pressure |
| Cabin Filter | HAC | Every 12,000–15,000 km or annually | Musty AC smell, reduced airflow, visible contamination |
Intervals shown are general guidelines. Always refer to the vehicle manufacturer service schedule as the primary reference, especially for turbocharged or high-performance engines which may require more frequent oil filter changes.
7. Post-Installation Checks
After completing any filter replacement, perform the following checks before returning the vehicle to service:
▸ Oil filter: Check for oil leaks at the filter seal after engine warm-up. Verify oil level is correct.
▸ Air filter: Check all airbox clips are fully closed. Listen for unusual intake noises.
▸ Fuel filter: Check all fuel line connections for leaks with the engine running and the fuel system pressurised.
▸ Cabin filter: Verify improved airflow from HVAC vents. No need to run the engine for this check.
▸ Log the replacement in the vehicle service record noting the HIFI filter code used and the odometer reading at replacement.
