Drawn Cup, Pillow Block and Specialist Bearings

Three bearing forms sit outside the main families and are asked for often enough to be worth explaining: the drawn cup needle roller bearing, which is pressed into a housing and has no machined outer race of its own; the pillow block, which is a bearing already mounted in a housing ready to bolt to a frame; and a handful of small specialist bearings such as air conditioning compressor clutch bearings. Each has its own fitting rules, and the drawn cup in particular is ruined by being fitted the way an ordinary bearing is fitted.

A drawn cup is a thin steel shell, pressed rather than machined, holding a cage of needle rollers. It has no thick outer ring: the housing bore becomes the outer race once the cup is pressed in. That is why it is so compact, and why it is unforgiving about the housing.

2. Fitting a Drawn Cup — the Part Most People Get Wrong

• Measure the housing bore before fitting. Out of tolerance, the bearing will either be loose or pinched, and there is no outer race to absorb the error.
• Use a proper mandrel sized to the cup, which supports the full face and pilots in the bore.
• Press to the specified depth — not simply flush, unless flush is the specification.
• Do not reuse a drawn cup. Removing one deforms it.
• Check the shaft hardness and finish. The needles run directly on the shaft on most designs; a soft or scored shaft destroys the bearing quickly.
• Fit the closed end towards the dirt or oil side where the design intends it as a seal.

3. Pillow Block Bearings

A pillow block is a complete unit: a bearing, usually a self-aligning insert with a spherical outer surface, already fitted inside a cast housing with mounting feet. It exists so a shaft can be supported by bolting a unit to a frame, with no machined housing bore required at all.

4. Selecting and Mounting a Pillow Block

• Specify by shaft diameter first, then by housing type and bolt centres.
• Check the locking method matches your shaft. Grub screws need a shaft that can take the marks; an eccentric collar locks in one direction of rotation only and must be fitted the right way round.
• Do not over-tighten the mounting bolts on an uneven base. The housing distorts and the spherical seat binds, which removes the self-aligning function.
• Shim the base flat rather than pulling the housing down onto a twisted surface.
• Let the unit find its own alignment before final tightening — turn the shaft, let the insert swivel, then tighten.
• Grease on a schedule. These units usually run in dusty, wet places; that is why they have a nipple.

5. Air Conditioning and Other Specialist Bearings

• Air conditioning compressor clutch bearing — a small sealed double-row bearing in the pulley. It runs whenever the engine runs, whether the air conditioning is on or not, so it fails from hours rather than from use. A rattle or squeal that stops when the belt is removed usually points here.
• Idler and tensioner bearings are covered in the timing tensioner article, but the same rule applies: replace them with the belt.
• Radial ball and plain roller bearings listed without a fuller description are usually general-purpose replacements — identify them by their number.
• Turntable and lazy susan bearings are thin-section thrust bearings for rotating platforms, not automotive parts.
• If a small bearing carries no legible number, bring it in. The counter can measure bore, outside diameter and width and match it in minutes.
