Self-Aligning Ball Bearings — Single and Double Row

A self-aligning bearing is built to tolerate something every other bearing hates: a shaft that is not quite in line with its housing. The outer race has a spherical seat, so the inner assembly can swivel a degree or two without loading the balls unevenly. That makes them the right answer for long shafts, fabricated frames and machinery that settles — and the wrong answer where rigid location is what you need. This article covers single and double row types, when misalignment tolerance helps and when it hides a real problem, and how to mount them.

1. What Self-Aligning Means

In an ordinary ball bearing the outer race groove is concentric with the shaft. If the shaft tilts, the balls are forced against one shoulder and the load concentrates on a few of them. A self-aligning bearing replaces that groove with a spherical raceway in the outer ring. The inner ring, the balls and the cage form one assembly that can pivot inside that sphere, so the balls stay correctly loaded even when the shaft is not square to the housing.

3. Where They Are the Right Choice

• Long shafts supported at both ends, where deflection under load tilts the journals.
• Fabricated or bolted frames that are not machined in one setting, so the two housings are never perfectly in line.
• Equipment on a foundation that settles, or a chassis that flexes in service.
• Housings that are hard to align during assembly — a workshop fitting a shaft into an existing frame.
• Applications with shaft deflection from belt tension, where the shaft bends under a side pull.

4. Where They Are the Wrong Choice

• Where axial location matters. This family locates a shaft poorly in the axial direction.
• Under significant thrust load. Use an angular contact or a thrust bearing instead.
• Where high rigidity is required — machine tool spindles and anything where shaft position must not move.
• As a repair for a worn housing bore. A bearing cannot fix a bore that is oval; the housing must be repaired.

5. How Much Misalignment Is Acceptable

The tolerance is real but small. Typical self-aligning ball bearings accept a couple of degrees of static misalignment; the exact figure is a manufacturer specification and varies with size and internal clearance. Two practical rules follow from that.

• Do not treat the figure as headroom. Running permanently at the limit shortens life sharply even though the bearing tolerates it.
• Check alignment anyway during installation, and use the bearing’s tolerance as a margin for service conditions, not as the design.
• Internal clearance matters. A bearing with greater internal clearance tolerates more misalignment but runs with more play; match the clearance class to the application rather than taking whatever is on the shelf.
• Ask if you are unsure — give us the shaft diameter, the housing bore and the application, and we will confirm the right size and clearance class.

6. Mounting, Fits and Sealing

• The rotating ring takes the interference fit. On a rotating shaft, the inner ring is the tight fit and the outer ring is a transition or loose fit in the housing.
• Heat the inner ring, do not hammer it. An induction heater or an oil bath at the specified temperature; never a direct flame.
• Press only on the ring being fitted. Load through the balls brinells the raceways — the bearing will be noisy from the first hour.
• Many of these bearings are supplied with a tapered bore and an adapter sleeve. Tighten the sleeve nut to the specified reduction in internal clearance, not to a feel.
• Check that the housing bore is round and to size before fitting; an oval bore pinches the outer race and removes the self-aligning function entirely.
• Seal and grease according to the environment. Dust and water are what end most bearing lives in Myanmar conditions.
