Wheel Bearings, Seal Kits and Hub Assemblies

A wheel bearing carries the entire weight of the corner, takes the side load of every turn, and spins whenever the vehicle moves. It is also one of the few parts that gives clear warning before it fails — a hum that rises with road speed and changes as you steer. On a quiet, straight road at a steady speed where the noise is clear, weave gently left and right — not a violent swerve, just enough to shift load between the wheels.

• Noise louder when weaving right loads the left-hand wheel — the left bearing is the suspect.
• Noise louder when weaving left points to the right bearing.
• No change either way means look at tyres, the differential or a driveline part instead.
• Confirm on the lift: raise the wheel, rock it top and bottom for play, then spin it and listen with a hand on the spring or the strut.
• Check both sides. The other one has done the same distance.

4. Why a Hub Assembly Is Often Cheaper

The part costs more than a bearing. The job usually costs less, and that is what the customer pays.

• No press work. A pressed-in bearing needs a shop press, the correct drifts, and time. A hub assembly bolts on.
• No risk of a damaged hub. Pressing a bearing out of a worn hub can score or distort it, and then the hub is needed anyway.
• Pre-set clearance. A cartridge assembly leaves the factory with its preload set; a press-fit job depends on the fitter getting it right.
• ABS ring included on most assemblies, so a damaged ring is not a separate problem.
• Where the press-fit bearing still wins: older taper-roller hubs on commercial vehicles, where the bearing is cheap, serviceable and designed to be adjusted.

5. ABS Rings and Sensors

• Many wheel bearings carry the ABS ring — either a toothed steel ring or a magnetic encoder built into the seal.
• A magnetic encoder has a side that must face the sensor. Fitted backwards, the ABS light comes on immediately and the bearing must come out again.
• Never clean a magnetic encoder with a steel brush or lay it on a bench near swarf — it picks up particles and the signal fails.
• An ABS fault after a bearing change is almost always the ring fitted backwards, a damaged tooth, or the sensor left unplugged.
• Check sensor clearance after fitting, and clear the fault codes before road testing.

6. What to Record Before Ordering

• Make, model, production year and variant — 2WD or 4WD, and the load rating on commercial vehicles.
• Front or rear, and whether the wheel is driven.
• Whether the vehicle has ABS, and how many teeth on the ring if you can count them.
• Bearing outside diameter, inside diameter and width if you are matching a loose bearing.
• Number of studs and the PCD for a hub assembly.
• Any number stamped on the old bearing or hub.

7. Fitting — the Mistakes That Kill a New Bearing

• Never hammer a bearing in. The shock passes through the rolling elements and brinells the races. It will be noisy within weeks.
• Press only on the race being fitted — the outer race into the hub, the inner race onto the shaft. Load through the balls or rollers destroys the bearing.
• Do not open a sealed bearing to add grease. It is packed and sealed for life; opening it admits dirt.
• Torque the hub nut to specification and use a new nut or split pin. An under-torqued nut lets the bearing run loose; over-torque crushes the preload out of it.
• Set the preload on adjustable taper hubs properly — tighten to seat, back off, then set to the figure. Guessing gives either drag or play.
• Clean the hub bore and the shaft to bare metal, and check for scoring before fitting.
• Replace in axle pairs on high-mileage vehicles.
