Choosing a bearing means matching four things: the direction of the load, the size of the load, the running speed, and whether the shaft stays in line. This article explains how to choose the right bearing type when the original is unknown or when you are specifying a replacement for a modified application.
Start here — in a repair, match the original If you are replacing a bearing that failed, fit the same designation the manufacturer specified, or a verified equivalent. The selection rules below are for when the original number is unknown, or when the application has changed.
1. Which direction is the load? —
- Radial load — pushes at right angles to the shaft, like the weight of the vehicle on a wheel. | shaft
- Axial load — pushes along the shaft, like cornering force on a wheel hub. Also called thrust load. | shaft
- Combined load — both at once, which is what most vehicle applications actually see.
2. How heavy is the load? —
Ball bearings touch the raceway at a point. Roller bearings touch along a line. For the same outside dimensions, a roller bearing therefore carries a much heavier load than a ball bearing.
3. How fast does it turn? —
Ball bearings run faster with less heat than roller bearings of the same size. Alternators, water pumps and idler pulleys turn fast under moderate load, which is why they use deep groove ball bearings. Wheel hubs turn slowly under very heavy load, which is why they use tapered rollers.
4. Does the shaft stay in line? — Shaft
If the shaft flexes under load, or the housings cannot be machined perfectly square, a rigid bearing will wear on one edge. A spherical roller bearing has a curved outer raceway that lets the inner assembly swivel, so it tolerates misalignment by design.
5. The selection rules —
- Radial load only, moderate, high speed → deep groove ball bearing
- Heavy radial and axial load together → tapered roller bearing, fitted as an opposed pair
- Radial plus axial in one direction, needing precision → angular contact ball bearing, usually paired
- Very heavy radial load, little or no axial → cylindrical roller bearing
- Misalignment cannot be removed → spherical roller bearing
- Radial load in a very small outside diameter → needle roller bearing
6. Then choose sealing and clearance — Seal
- Dust, mud or water present → rubber seals, 2RS
- Clean and enclosed, lower friction wanted → metal shields, ZZ
- Housing supplies oil → open bearing, no suffix
- Runs hot, or a tight interference fit on the shaft → C3 clearance
If the bearing you removed was marked C3, the replacement must also be C3. Fitting a standard-clearance bearing where C3 was specified is a common cause of early overheating.
If you are unsure, send our trade desk the vehicle make, model and year, the position the bearing sits in, and the three dimensions of the old part. We will confirm the correct type.
