Perform a visual inspection with the engine cold. Look for these specific signs:
Exterior Inspection

- Inspect the braid layer (on 3-layer models) for broken wire strands
Joint & Connection Inspection
- Check exhaust clamps — ensure tight, not cracked or stripped
- For flanged connections — check all flange bolts for looseness
- Inspect gaskets at both ends — look for exhaust staining indicating gasket failure
- Check exhaust hangers near the flex pipe — a broken hanger puts stress on the flex connector
Running Engine Check
- With engine idling in a safe ventilated area — listen for hissing, tapping, or blowing sounds near the flex pipe area
- Carefully (do not touch hot components) observe for exhaust smoke puffing from the flex pipe connections
