Maintenance & Inspection Guide

Why Regular Inspection Matters

Flexible exhaust pipes are wear items. Regular inspection catches deterioration early — before a small crack becomes an exhaust leak, and before a failed flex pipe causes damage to the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter.

Flex Pipe

1. Recommended Inspection Intervals  —

Vehicle Type Inspection Interval Notes
Passenger cars Every 10,000 km or 6 months Check at each routine service
Pickup trucks / SUVs Every 10,000 km or 6 months More frequent if used off-road or for towing
Light commercial trucks Every 5,000 km or 3 months Higher vibration load — inspect more frequently
Heavy trucks / buses Every 5,000 km or 3 months Critical — check at every scheduled maintenance
Myanmar road use (all types) Reduce interval by 20–30% if using unpaved roads regularly Rough roads accelerate flex pipe fatigue

2. Visual Inspection Procedure  —

Perform a visual inspection with the engine cold. Look for these specific signs:

Exterior Inspection

  • Look for visible cracks, tears, or holes in the corrugated bellows section  |  ကြိုးနှဲ Bellows တွင် ကွဲကြောင်း၊ ပေါက်ချောင်း ရှိမရှိ ကြည့်ပါ
  • Check for black carbon staining or soot deposits around the pipe joints — indicates exhaust leakage  |  မည်းနေသော Carbon Deposit ဖြင့် Exhaust Leak ကို စစ်နိုင်သည်
  • Check for excessive rust or corrosion penetrating through the metal layers
  • Look for mechanical damage from road debris strikes  |
  • Inspect the braid layer (on 3-layer models) for broken wire strands

Joint & Connection Inspection

  • Check exhaust clamps — ensure tight, not cracked or stripped
  • For flanged connections — check all flange bolts for looseness
  • Inspect gaskets at both ends — look for exhaust staining indicating gasket failure
  • Check exhaust hangers near the flex pipe — a broken hanger puts stress on the flex connector

Running Engine Check

  • With engine idling in a safe ventilated area — listen for hissing, tapping, or blowing sounds near the flex pipe area
  • Carefully (do not touch hot components) observe for exhaust smoke puffing from the flex pipe connections
  • Check for exhaust smell inside the cabin — any smell indicates a leak somewhere in the system

3. Warning Signs — Replace Immediately  —

Symptom Severity Action Required
Visible hole or crack in bellows 🔴 CRITICAL Replace immediately — exhaust gas leak
Exhaust smell inside cabin 🔴 CRITICAL Stop driving — CO hazard — inspect and replace
Loud blowing / hissing exhaust noise 🟠 HIGH Inspect within 24 hours — likely exhaust leak
Carbon soot around joints 🟠 HIGH Clean and re-inspect — replace if persistent
Visible rust penetrating through metal 🟡 MEDIUM Replace at next service — monitor closely
Broken braid wire strands (3-layer) 🟡 MEDIUM Replace before next trip — braid failure accelerates
Slight rattling at cold start 🟢 LOW Monitor — can be normal on some vehicles

4. Service Life Expectations  —

Model Application Expected Life (Myanmar conditions)
2-Layer, No Braid City driving, passenger car 25,000 – 50,000 km
2-Layer, No Braid Highway / mixed use 40,000 – 60,000 km
3-Layer, With Braid Pickup, light truck 50,000 – 80,000 km
3-Layer, With Braid Heavy truck, commercial 40,000 – 70,000 km

Note: Service life is reduced by rough road conditions, engine mount wear, incorrect sizing, and deferred maintenance. Myanmar unpaved road use may reduce expected life by 20–30%.

5. Maintenance Record Keeping  —

For fleet operators and commercial vehicles, maintaining a service log improves planning and reduces unplanned downtime:

Record This Why It Helps
Installation date & mileage Know exactly when the part was fitted and estimate next inspection/replacement
WPR part number installed Fast reordering — no need to re-measure the pipe
Inspection results & dates Track deterioration rate and plan replacement before failure
Vehicle ID / registration Essential for fleet management across multiple vehicles
